Description

  • Charles G. Bartholomew
  • GENTLEMEN ROGUES
  • daguerreotype
sixth-plate daguerreotype, sealed, the photographer's 'G. Bartholomew, Artist' letterpress credit on the mat, cased, 1850s

Condition

Of the many daguerreotypes that fall into the 'Smokers and Drinkers' genre, few capture their subjects as charmingly as the one offered here. The cheerful bonhomie evinced by the pair of young gentlemen, as they share a bottle and puff upon cigars, raises this image from the level of hackneyed cliché to a perceptive and lively portrait of two very real individuals. This daguerreotype is crisp and clear and captures the animated features of its sitters in great detail. The plate is in fine condition. Close examination reveals a small diffuse rust-colored area in the center of the plate. There is sporadic minor tarnishing around the edge of the image. The paper seal is almost certainly original, and is browned but intact.

Catalogue Note

This image was taken by the daguerreotypist Charles G. Bartholomew, who also billed himself simply as G. Bartholomew.  According to Craig's Daguerreian Registry, Bartholomew practiced the art of daguerreotypie in Ithaca and, later, Auburn, New York (cf. Vol. 2, p. 37).
