Condition

Overall the condition of the group is good. There is dirt and some minor wear consistent with age. There are a few minor losses. The figures were carved in sections some of the joints have been repaired. There are several small restorations in wax to the reverse of the coral. A few of the foliate sections of coral on the base have been glued down. The copper has some slight dents and bending. The green colouration has slightly tarnished.

Catalogue Note

The Arte dei Corallari, the guild of coral workers, was established in Trapani on the southern coast of Sicily in 1628. Due to its geographical position with extensive coral banks, it became one of the principal commercial ports of the Mediterranean, exporting intricate coral and goldsmiths' works throughout the Mediterranean basin.
