Description

  • bust of a boy (possibly the young St John the Baptist)
  • white marble, on a gilt and polychromed wood base

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is good. There is wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are some naturally occurring inclusions and veining visible on the surface, including down his left cheek. Stable naturally occurring hairline fissures run along the proper right side of his forehead, down from his right ear and along the edge at the proper right side of his back. There is some minor weathering to the top of the head and left shoulder. A less stained area which could have been covered by a loin cloth runs along the proper right shoulder. The tip of the nose was reattached. There is wear and dirt to the gilding of the base and there are a few minor chips to its edges.
