Description

  • Crucifixion group
  • polychromed wood, with a modern stand

Condition

All three figures have worming throughout which has resulted in some losses along the edges and to the nose of Christ. There are several areas of losses to the paint. Naturally occurring splits in the wood are visible at the head of St John and around the knees of Mary. There are areas of restoration, including at the feet of both Christ and St. John and Christ's abdomen and proper left thigh. Christ has a small patch of paper covering a fragile section of polychromy. Christ's arms were carved separately and joined at the back with two large iron nails. A small iron nail is fixed in the back of Christ's head. There is some worming to the frame which holds the base. The beige velvet cloth covering the base is stained throughout.
