Catalogue Note

Medieval iconography often illustrates that any misbehaviour on earth had dire consequences. Here a noblewoman is being carried off to hell by a flying demon. Similar imagery can be found on an oak misericord in All Saints' Church in Gresford, which shows a demon carting two women away in a wheelbarrow.
