Literature
H.E. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, vol. II, The Portraits, London 1971, p. 142, under cat. no. 101 (as an "excellent copy of the Berlin portrait").
Condition
The canvas is relined. A couple small losses and rubbing are visible around the edges, possibly due to the frame. To the naked eye, and under UV, the entire composition is under a thick milky varnish. This older, discolored varnish has rendered any older retouches underneath mostly invisible. There may be some retouches in the middle right portion of the composition, where the naked eye the surface appears dry. There do not appear to be any major areas of loss or damage and overall the picture presents a lovely image. In a carved wooden frame.

Catalogue Note
Titian's Portrait of Clarice Strozzi, now in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin was painted in 1542 when she was two years old. She was the daughter of Roberto Strozzi and Maddalena dei Medici, and her portrait was probably painted in her family's residence in San Canciano in Venice, where her parents lived in exile from 1536-1542. They returned to Rome in 1544 and at age fifteen Clarice married Cristofano Savelli, the son of a noble Roman family. She died in 1581.
