Description

  • Giacinto Diano
  • Venus stealing Cupid's bow
  • oil on canvas, a bozzetto

Provenance

Dr. H.C. Heinrich Scheufelen (1866-1948);
Dr. Ing. E.H. Scheufelen, Oberlenningen.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has an effective relining which has not flattened the paint surface. The surface appears secure and under a slightly yellowed varnish. Scattered retouchings which have discoloured can be made out upper centre, lower left and lower right. These are confirmed by UV light as well as some minor other localised retocuhings upper centre. Overall the bozzetto retains its freshness and is offered in a later wood and plaster frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

This is Diano's preparatory sketch for his finished painting that was sold London, Sotheby's Olympia, 1 November 2005, lot 140, for £38,000 (and reproduced there on the front cover). The work enjoys a distinguished provenance having been part of the German industrialist Heinrich Scheufelen's collection, many of whose Italian baroque paintings are now housed in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
