Description

  • Zanino di Pietro
  • Madonna and child
  • oil on panel, curved top, gold ground

Provenance

With Clausen Art Rooms, New York (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The support consists of a single panel with a convex bow. The paint surface is generally secure. There is an old area of damage to the left of the Christ child's head, some substantial repaint in the dark blue of the Madonna's cloak and some regilding in parts of the background. Inspection under UV light highlights confirms the repaint in the aforementioned areas and reveals scattered other minor retouchings. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with a pointed and arched top in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

The attribution is due to Dott. Andrea de Marchi, to whom we are grateful. Dott. de Marchi has dated this work to the early 1420s and compares the pose of the Christ child here with that in Zanino's work from circa 1415-20 in the Pinacoteca nazionale di Ferrara, in which Christ is shown naked, draped in a transparent veil by his mother, his head however angled upwards towards God the father (see D. Benati, in La Pinacoteca nazionale di Ferrara. Catalogo generale, Bologna 1992, pp. 81-82, cat. no. 86).
