Condition

The paintings are less red than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Gentleman: the canvas has an effective relining and the paint surface is secure and under a discoloured varnish. Discoloured retouchings and some old abrasion can be made out in the hands. Some minor scattered discoloured retouchings can be made out with the naked eye in the face. An old restored tear of 10 by 10 cm which has discolourd somewhat can be made out in the left sleeve. Inspection under UV lght reveals further localised retouchings in the hair and cloak but large passages appear untouched. Lady: in a very similar condition to above. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface is secure under a discoloured varnish. Some scattered discoloured retouchings can be made out in the flesh tones. Some further localised retouchings flouresce under UV light. Both paintings would benefit from removal of the old varnish and application of a new varnish. Both offered in carved and gilt wood frames in good condition.
