Condition

STRUCTURE Both canvases have an old, course lining. STRUCTURE Both paintings appear to be in good condition, though they both have a very discoloured varnish overall and a lot of ingrained dirt. There is quite a bit of old, visible over paint in the background of the portrait of John, though this does not occur in the portrait of Elizabeth. There is a further area of retouching in the lower left of the portrait of John. There is one small crack in the paint, in the portrait of Elizabeth, in the sitter's right hand cheek, and a small area of retouching in the centre of her chest. There are further minor scattered abrasions overall in both paintings. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the condition mentioned above, and the discolouration and opacity of the varnish. There does not appear to be any further restoration. FRAME Held in matching gilded British baroque wooden frame.
