Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface is secure and relatively clean under a glossy varnish.
Inspection under UV light reveals some interference around the outline of the figures in the brown paint but whether this is a difference in varnish thickness or later strengthening is unclear.
Offered in a carved gold and cream painted frame in good condition.

We are grateful to Dr Richard Harmanni of the RKD for confirming the attribution to Dirk van der Aa on the basis of photographs and dating the present work to between 1780-1800.
