Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There do not appear to be any areas of paint loss or visible over painting. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals an old and slightly opaque varnish overall. There is an area of retouching to the right of the sitter's nose, in the dark area of flesh tone denunciating the shadow cast by nose. There are a small number of very minor scattered retouches overall, and there is some strengthening along the top of the sitter's right holder. Otherwise the painting appears to be in good, original condition. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded frame.

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the 3rd son of Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Bt. of Abercuchill (d.1704). He was commissioner of customs for Edinburgh, a position he recieved largely through the interests of the Earl of Ilay, later 3rd Duke of Argyll, who had been painted by Ramsay in 1744.
