Description
- Still life of mice and vine leaves
- remains of signature and dated lower right: ....1626
- oil on paper, laid on panel, unframed
Condition
The painting is slightly lighter and less red in tone then the catalogue illustration suggests. The paper support has been laid on to a flat bevelled panel. Along the centre a vertical line is present- presumably where the paper was folded before being laid down- and some discoloured retouchings can be made out. Three surface scratches of between 5cm and 10 cm can be seen lower right, as visible in the catalogue illustration. Other minor discoloured retouchings can be made out in the lower left corner and minor scattered patches in the background, for example a 3 cm vertical line of retouching to the right of the central leaf. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and points to a very small (2mm by 2mm) hole in the red leaf, and a horizontal line of retouching at the centre left edge, possibly covering an old tear. Overall the paining is in large passages untouched and in good condition.
Unframed.
