Description

  • George Smith of Chichester
  • A wooded landscape with a cottage and figures by a path
  • signed lower left: G. & J. Smith.
  • oil on canvas

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There is a discoloured varnish overall which gives the picture the appearance of being very dark. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a small number of very minor scattered retouchings in the foreground, and there are several areas of strengthening in the sky, in the upper section of the painting. The sky has been cleaned but the foliage and the landscape have not. There is a clear delineation line where the old, opaque varnish can be seen covering everything below the line of the foliage. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded wooden frame, in good condition.
