The painting is sharper, more contrasted and more colourful than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been recently relined and the paint surface appears a little flattened. The painting has been recently cleaned and the varnish is clear and even. Overall the paint surface is quite well preserved, though some thinness is apparent in the background. Inspection under UV reveals repainting in the background, especially in the upper left corner, and scattered strengthenings and retouchings; for example on the bird upper left, upper centre in the background, an area to the left of the oysters, on the right side of the composition on and around the hung birds, around the peaches lower left and the pear lower centre. The still life has for the most part survived intact, particularly the breadroll and the grapes which are painted in an extremely accomplished manner. Overall the painting is in good condition and can be hung as it is. The Rococo-style gilt wood frame is suitable and in good condition.
