Description

  • A river passing through a village, with travellers on a road to the left;A river landscape with Villagers making merry at a fair
  • a pair, the former signed and dated lower left: THMans.i682 (THM in compendium)
the latter signed and dated lower right: THMans.i68i (THM in compendium)

  • both oil on canvas

Condition

The paintings are both signed and slightly redder than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both canvases have stable and effective relinings. Both paint surfaces appear secure and under a dirty varnish. The fomer painting has suffered a small (2 by 1 cm) damage lower right, as visible in the catalogue illustration. When examined in raking light there appears to have been some later paint applied to the sky. Examination under UV light is inconclusive due to the glossy varnish. The paintings would benefit from a clean to improve the overall tonality. Offered in carved and gilt wood frames with some knocks.
