Description

  • A kermesse on a village green
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With Agnew's, London (according to an old label on the reverse);
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 1 March 1994, lot 107 (as by Pieter van den Borcht).

Condition

The actual painting is greener and brighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is in good condition and lightly bevelled along the edges. The paint surface is secure, if a little abraded in some of the outlines. Some small scattered retouchings, some discoloured, can be made out with the naked eye, e.g. in the sky and in some of the figures. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals additional scattered retouchings, some quite crude. Offered in a plain wood frame with moulded fillets in good condition.
