Description
- Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde
- A stage play in a village street, with numerous villagers watching, a church in the background
- oil on canvas, laid down on panel
Condition
The actual painting is softer and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has been laid down on panel, which consists of two horizontal planks. The paint layer is quite abraded and subsequent scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye. The craquelure pattern is fairly coarse. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals quite extensive retouchings throughout, e.g. in the sky, along the join of the panel, and in the group of figures lower right.
Offered in a plain wood frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
Berckheyde has painted several stage scenes like this. See for example the one sold, Vienna, Dorotheum, 13-16 March 1962, lot 14, which was dated 1685 and almost similar in size.
