bidding is closed

Description

  • Jacob Willemsz. de Wet the Elder
  • Christ and the woman taken in adultery
  • signed with initials lower centre: J.W.
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

In the family of the present owner since the 1830/40s.

Exhibited

Oberhessisches Museum, Giessen, from 1981 until recently (on loan from the current owner).

Condition

The actual painting is a little less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined. The paint surface has become somewhat flattened and is under a thick and glossy varnish layer. The paint layer is quite abraded in the background and there are some tiny scattered paint losses in the lower foreground. Old scattered retouchings, more frequent in the background can be made out with the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals a few additional recent scattered spots of retouching, but further inspection is impeded by the thick varnish layer. Offered in a plain black wood frame with a gilt fillet.
