Description
- Frans Francken III
- The nativity encircled by a garland of roses, parrot tulips, lilies, violets, forget-me-nots, lily of the valley and other flowers
- oil on copper, stamped on the reverse with the maker's mark of Jan Michielsen (active in Antwerp circa 1660-91)
Condition
The actual painting is a little greener in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The copper plate is in good condition. The paint surface appears nicely preserved with a lot of detail still intact. Some minor retouchings can be observed in the background and there are a few tiny retouched losses along the right edge of the central scene. The paint surface is under a fairly clear layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals only a few tiny touches in the central scene, a few additional ones in the background, but only some minor scattered ones in the flowers which overall, are nicely preserved.
Offered in a parcel gilt cassetta style wood frame in good condition.
