Description

  • Frans Francken the Younger
  • The adoration of the shepherds surrounded by a garland of flowers, together with a butterfly and a dragonfly
  • oil on panel, branded on the reverse with a panel maker's mark (unidentified)

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 7 October 1998, lot 16 (as by Jan Breughel the Younger).

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The panel seems to consist of two vertical planks and is cradled. There's some minor flaking to the upper centre below the edge, to the lower centre and lower corner left above the edge. Otherwise, no damages are apparent and the paint surface is generally sound. Minor retouchings can be observed along the join, in some of the figures and in the background in the scene. The paint surface is under a fairly clear layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some small scattered retouchings in the flowers and a small repaired dames in the two white flower upper right. Offered in a plain wood frame with moulded borders and a gilt fillet in good condition.
