- oil on canvas
Provenance
W.L. Erhardt, 1892;
Art market, The Hague, by 1959 (according to a note at the R.K.D., The Hague).
Exhibited
London, Guildhall Art Gallery, Corporation of London, Art Gallery: Loan collection of pictures, 28 March - 30 June 1892 (lent by W.L. Erhardt).
Literature
A.G. Temple, Corporation of London, Art Gallery: descriptive catalogue of the loan collection of pictures, London 1892, cat. no. 64.
Condition
The actual painting is a little softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
Also, the tear has been repaired. This is very well and precisely done, as the tear is hardly visible to the naked eye. The canvas has an old effective relining. The paint surface is generally sound, if a little abraded in the background. Some tiny scattered (some discoloured) retouchings can be made out with the naked eye, e.g. in the wall in the background, in the chimney, and a few tiny ones in the man seated in the foreground and the boy standing behind him. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals only a few additional scattered retouchings, e.g. in the man standing in the background, and the small recently repaired tear as mentioned above. The figures, overall, are nicely preserved.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.
