Description

  • Adriaen jansz. van Ostade
  • An interior of an inn with peasants smoking and drinking
  • bears(?) traces of a signature lower left: A. os..de
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Counts of Neipperg, of Wurtemberg and Baden, created Counts of the Holy Roman Empire (according to a wax seal on the reverse);
With Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam, before 1970 (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is in good condition and no damages are apparent. The paint layer is secure, if quite abraded in darker passages, mostly in the lower foreground and in the figure most right, and subsequent retouching can be made out in these areas. A few tiny retouchings and minor strengthening is also visible in the group of figures on the left. The paint surface is under a dull and dirty varnish layer, which impedes any inspection under UV light. Offered in a plain wood frame with some old worm damage.
