Description

  • David Vinckboons
  • A village scene with a bagpipe player surrounded by children
  • signed in monogram and indistinctly dated upper right: DvB(in compendium) 160.
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone and shows less contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has a thin horizontal repaired split running through the centre and, therefore, has been cradled to the reverse. The paint surface is quite abraded and subsequent retouchings can be made out with the naked eye throughout (e.g. in the crippled figure, in the background figures, along the split, and in the faces of some of the children). The paint surface is under a glossy and dirty varnish layer, which impedes inspection under UV light. Offered in a plain wood frame in good condition.
