Catalogue Note

Moreau the elder was almost exclusively a landscape painter and was, above all else, a great master of gouache.  His landscape scenes are notable for the fluidity which he is able to achieve in the medium, and the great sense of spontaneity he captures with his brush: a quality suggestive of the revolution the Impressionists were to bring to French painting in the following century.
