Catalogue Note

The present painting is based upon a composition of the same view by Canaletto (Royal Collection), which was engraved by Antonio Visentini, and published in his Urbis Venetiarium Prospectus Celebriores in 1742 (Part I, Plate X). A similar view after Canaletto was formerly in the collection of J. Paul Getty (Sutton Place). The view is taken from the Grand Canal, at the entrance to the Cannaregio Canal, with the bell tower of San Geremia on the left, and the Palazzo Labia, famous for its frescos by Tiepolo.
