Catalogue Note
Henry Drummond was the fourth son of William Drummond, 4th Viscount Strathallen, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Lord William Murray. On 21st March 1761 he married Elizabeth, daughter of the Hon. Charles Compton. He was a banker and lived at The Grange in Hampshire. He died in 1795. A letter attached to the reverse refers to Drummond's friendship with Sir Thomas Mostyn and to a portrait of him by Reynolds, but the Reynolds portrait, showing the sitter in a similar hunt costume, is in fact of Sir Roger Mostyn (1734-1796), Sir Thomas' son. Appointments for 'Mr Drummond' are recorded in Reynolds's sitters books for June 23rd and September 25th 1767 and there is also an appointment for Mostyn on 19th May 1767.
