Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is a very fine craquelure predominantly in the figure and his steed. There is a notable impasto overall but there appears to be no apparent damage or loss of paint. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching and an old discoloured varnish overall. There is also evidence of strengthening to the impasto in the bottom right and top left. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded baroque style frame. Catalogue Note

The uniform of the sitter dates this picture to between 1832 and 1846, when the stiffened leather helmet with gilt fittings and a bearskin crest seen in the present painting were replaced with an all metal one with a falling horse hair tail. A second version of this picture is at Anglesey Abbey.
