Description
- Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael
- The Madonna and Child with John the Baptist, La Belle Jardinière
- oil on copper
Condition
The painting is brighter and more vibrant in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single flat copper plate is stable and the painting is offered in an elaborate carved wooden frame. With the naked eye the paint surface appears clean and in good condition, with very minor oxidisation in the blue pigment of the Madonna's cloak. Inspection under UV light reveals just minor scattered retouchings. Overall in good clean condition and could hang now.

Catalogue Note
A 17th-century copy after Raphael's original in the Louvre, Paris (see P. de Vecchia, L'Opera Completa di Raphael, Milan 1979, p. 97, no. 69). An attribution to Giovanni Battista Salvi, il Sassoferrato (1609-85) has been suggested.
