Description

  • Hendrick Verschuring
  • RIDERS IN A LANDSCAPE
  • oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame

Provenance

Sale, 1857, lot 393 (according to a label on the reverse);
Hardy collection, Frankfurt a. M., 1878;
Carl Ph. Ernst collection, Frankfurt a. M.;
His sale, Frankfurt, Dehio, 25 November 1972, lot 138, where acquired for the present collection.

Condition

The canvas has a modern and quite firm relining. The paint surface appears sound and under a slightly discoloured varnish. To the naked eye the paint surface is dirty but in good condition, if a little flat. Inspection under UV light reveals some strengthenings in the horse centre right, a small area of retouching between the central horse's hind legs, some minor strengthenings to the dog lower left as well as some very minor, scattered retouchings. Removal of the varnish and application of a less glossy varnish would enhance the overall tonality of the picture, which is structurally sound. Offered in a modern carved wooden frame which is structurally secure with some surface chips.
