Provenance

Condition

The catalogue illustration is faithful in tone, but a little brighter than the painting. The canvas has an old relining whivh is still effective, and has not flattened the paint surface. To the naked eye the signed paint surface appears clean and in good condition, with some fine craquelure. In the background the brown tone has become a little sunken centre right. The yellow in the flowers upper left has become a little abraded. Inspection under UV light confirms the good condition with very minor retouchings to the background and along the craquelure lower centre, around the rose centre left and in a horizontal line of ten centimetres centre left (presumably a restored, old tear), as well as some minor strengthenings. Offered in a modern, Dutch-style, black rippled frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The attribution to Cornelis de Heem has been endorsed by Walther Bernt (certificate of January 1977) and more recently by Fred G. Meijer of the RKD, the Hague. The latter describes this as '...a good and characteristic example of Cornelis de Heem' and has suggested a dating in the 1660s or 1670s (communication dated 12 May 1998).
