Description

  • Pieter de Neyn
  • A river landscape with fishermen casting their net, a windmill beyond
  • dated on the spar lower centre: 1635
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Acquired for the present collection in c. 1968-9 from a Swiss private collector.

Condition

The actual painting is less green and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks, joint horizontally and reinforced by a strip of wood to the reverse. It is bevelled to all sides. One repaired crack can be seen of approx. 10 cm, running from the left edge above the joint, but is reinforced by a strip of wood to the reverse. Otherwise the paint surface is in good condition. Some abrasion in the sky but the details in the foreground are very nicely preserved. UV reveals small scattered retouchings in the sky, along the joint and crack, one in the windmill and some tiny ones in the trees. Offered in a carved and gilt wood fram, good condition. (ML)
