Description

  • Portrait of a man with a moustache and ring tied around his neck, possibly a self-portrait
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The catalogue illustration is too yellow. The canvas has been recently relined and is stable. The paint surface is generally very well preserved but is rather dirty. There are a few minor surface scratches to the varnish. There are some old areas of restoration which have now discoloured and are visible to the naked eye, including several clusters or retouchings to the background: upper left, centre left, lower left and centre right. There is a horizontal line of old restoration running through the beard and chin and a circular restoration to the top of the sitter's forehead. There is some minor strengthening to the eyelids and his right nostril. The painting is generally in good condition although would benefit from a clean. Sold with a gilt frame, in good condition.
