Provenance

Galerie Julius Böhler, Munich, 1930's;
Dr Gygs, Wildegg, Switzerland (according to an old label on the reverse).

Exhibited

On loan to the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Switzerland after 1959;
On loan to the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Condition

The painting is slightly greener in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The support consists of a single flat panel, cradled to the reverse. There is a very slight convex bow to the panel along the left hand margin. The paint surface is secure, and the colours remain vibrant. There are some unobtrusive surface damages along the lower margin and some very small retouchings to the top of the cross which can be made out with the naked eye. Inspection under UV light confirms the good condition of the painting, revealing just a few very minor spot retouchings scattered throughout the composition. The varnish covering the painting is somewhat dirty and uneven and the painting would therefore benefit from a light surface clean. Offered in a wooden frame in fairly good condition.
