Description

  • A triptych:Central panel: The Crucifixionleft wing: Saint John the Baptistright wing: Saint Barbara
  • oil on panel, shaped top

Condition

The uncradled central panel consists of three vertical panels. The wing panels are both single panels. The paint surface is well preserved and secure, bar some flaking and lifting to the right hand panel. The impasto is well maintained, especially in the trees and foliage. The left hand panel join is visible on the surface of the central panel and may need attention. There is also some abrasion and subsequent restoration to the central region of the central panel, in Christ's torso and the sky. Some tenting is visible on the left hand side of the central panel which may also need attention soon. Inspection under UV light reveals some retouching to the red clothing of St John the Evangelist in the central panel, St John the Baptist on the left wing and Saint Barbara on the right wing. These retouchings are mainly to the folds of their dress. The front panels, depicting the Annunciation, have not survived quite so well and are disfigured by some large areas of strengthenings through the background, retouchings to the figures, paint losses and some tenting. Offered in a gold painted wooden frame in fairly good condition.
