Literature

S. Kostyshyn, Door Tsoccken men vindt: A re-introduction to the life and work of Peeter Baltens alias Custodis of Antwerp, Michigan 1995, vol. II, p. 805, no. 124, fig. 178 (as by a follower of Marten van Cleve);
K. Ertz, Pieter Brueghel der Jüngere, Lingen 2000, vol. I, p. 912, no. A1268, reproduced.

Condition

The painting is slightly greener in tone and brighter than the catalogue illustration. The support consists of two horizontal panels, bevelled on the right and left hand edges, which are essentially flat but there is a very slight convex along the top margin. There are two very slight surface cracks, measuring approximately 1 and 4 cm., coming in from the left hand margin. There are some scattered losses and scuffs to the paint surface along the painting's horizon, as visible in the catalogue illustration. There is also some abrasion apparent to the paint in the sky, buildings and grass. However, the paint surface is otherwise secure and clean, and retains impasto in the trees and figures. Inspection under UV light reveals some fairly extensive retouchings and strengthenings to the sky, buildings and foreground of the painting, while the staffage seems to be less affected with only scattered retouchings. Offered in a gilt edged wooden frame in good condition.
