Catalogue Note

The sitter can be identified as one of the three daughters of Alexander Hume (c. 1693-1765) and Mary, eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Frederick Bt. She is likely to be either Jane (b. 1730) or Isobel (b.1733). Alexander Hume was M.P. for Southwark and a director of the East India Company. He acquired the estate of Wormleybury in 1739.
