Condition

STRUCTURE The panel is in a stable condition providing a flat surface for the picture. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There is one very small loss of paint in the upper left corner but otherwise there is no apparent damage. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a small number of very minor flecks of retouching in the centre right and upper left in the sky. FRAME Held in a gilded baroque style frame. The present work relates to Etty's large scale history painting The Combat: Woman Pleading for the Vanquished, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825, which now hangs in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. The painting was exhibited to widespread acclaim and praise, following which Etty was elected an Associate Royal Academician.
