Description

  • Vicente Giner
  • A mediterranean harbour capriccio with figures beneath classical ruins
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The old relining is still effective. The weave of the canvas can be made out on the paint surface which is dirty. The impasto is well preserved under the discoloured varnish. Small scattered losses can be made out, as visible in the online image. Inspection under UV lgiht reveals minor scattered retouchings. The painting would benefit from a clean. Offered in a wooden frame with some chips.

Catalogue Note

Giner, a priest from Valencia, worked with Viviano Codazzi in Rome during the 1660s and the latter would remain the dominant influence on his architectural views throughout his career. We are grateful to Dr. David Ryley Marshall for pointing out that the present work was probably executed after Giner's return to Spain. Stylistically it may be compared with a pair of paintings formerly on the Roman art market; see D. R. Marshall, Viviano and Niccolò Codazzi, Rome 1993, pp. 512-513, cat. nos. VGI5 and VGI6, both reproduced.
