Description

  • Portrait of a young lady with her dog jean seated under a tree
  • inscribed with the identity of the sitter centre left on the tree: Camile/ A/ jean/ 24 Juin 1817

  • oil on panel

Condition

The stable support consists of two vertical flat panels, cradled to the reverse. There are two restored splits running from the top edge, one on the left hand side, measuring approx. 20cm, and one on the right hand side, measuring approx. 8cm. The paint surface is clean and secure, and retains some impasto. Some retouching work to the ribbon of the lady's bonnet and bodice is visible to the naked eye, though is not terribly noticeable. Inspection under UV light confirms these retouchings and those along the aforementioned splits and panel join, and further reveals quite extensive but localised retouchings to the background. Offered in an ornate carved gilt wood frame in good condition with some very minor losses.
