Description
- Johann Alexander Thiele
- A panoramic view of a valley with the schloss Tiefenau in the far distance
- signed and indistinctly dated lower centre: JA Thiele.../17...
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Kurt Nass, Hamburg, by whom bought in 1952;
Thence by descent until sold, New York, Sotheby's, 12 January 1995. lot 10.
Condition
The painting is darked and less green than the catalogue illustration suggests. The unlined canvas retains its bounce and appears free from structural damages other than a 5 cm hole lower left with a patch to the reverse. The paint surface is rather dirty but appears sound with the impasto well preserved under a slightly discoloured varnish. Some craquelure is present throughout. The darker tones appear rather sunken and abraded, for example in the dark patch of sky upper right snd in some of the darker tones in the foliage upper left and lower right.
Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouchings along some of the craquelure as well as some other minor scattered areas. The retouching is more concentrated in the sky upper left.
Offered in a later carved wooden frame in good condition.
