Description
- Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato
- the virgin at prayer
- oil on canvas
Provenance
In the collection of the family of the present owner since the early 20th century.
Condition
The canvas has been relined and this process has flattened the paint surface which is under a thick yellowed varnish. The blue of the Virgin's robe appears oxidised.
Small paint losses are present, as visible in the catalogue illustration, lower right, on the chin, above the eyes, below the neck and along the left edge.
UV analysis is inconclusive due to the thick varnish but some retouchings are visible on the forehead and to the left of the forehead. Offered in a later carved and gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note
We are grateful to M. François Macé de Lepinay for endorsing the attribution to Sassoferrato on the basis of photographs. He reserves final judgement until the removal of the thick layer of old varnish now covering the paint surface.
