Catalogue Note

It is yet to be discovered which of Godward's realized works was informed by the present oil sketch.  The sketch likely dates after the artist's travel to Rome in 1912.  Another finished work by Godward of 1915 also portrays the statue of the lion goddess Sekhmet, from the fountain in the Piazza Popolo, Rome.
