Catalogue Note
Gustav Mahler had tried to stage Strauss's opera Guntram at Hamburg, but his plans fell through; Strauss's own performance at Munich (16 November 1895) was a disaster, and he was convinced that cabals in the city had worked to ensure its failure. This letter was formerly in the celebrated collection of Louis Koch.
