Catalogue Note
Rare. Autograph manuscripts by Fanny Hensel are uncommon at auction. While this fair presentation copy for the singer Johanna Zimmermann (who had sung in a performance of Mendelssohn's opera Die beiden Neffen in 1824) is hitherto unknown, both songs, settings of poems by Heine and Lenau, are also contained in the so-called "Italian"-Album of Fanny, now in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. "Mein Liebchen, wir saßen beisammen" and "Die Sennin" are nos. 362 and 383, respectively, in Renate Hellwig-Unruh, Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Thematisches Verzeichnis der Kompositionen (Adliswil, 2000), pp.304 and 315. Hellwig-Unruh dates "Die Sennin" to 11 August 1841, following a dated manuscript in Berlin; the time of composition of "Mein Liebchen, wir saßen beisammen' is placed between autumn 1839 and autumn 1841. See lot 58.
