Description

  • Autograph transcript by George III of passages from the libretto of Messiah, unsigned, written evidently for the use of William Boyce.

the two pages titled "Christmas Day" and "Good Friday", annotated by the King "1st Chorus 2d Act of the Mesiah",  including Nos.14-17 "There were Shepherds abiding in the Field...Glory to God in the Highest, and Peace on Earth, Good Will towards Men", and Nos 20-21 "Come unto him all ye that labour...His Yoke is easy and his Burden is Light"  [end of Part One], with, on the second page ("Good Friday"), No.22 "Behold the Lamb of God...", Nos. 29-32 "Thy Rebuke has broken his heart...nor didst thou suffer they Holy one to see Corruption" and no.35 "Let all the Angels of God Worship Him", the verses marked "Recitative", "Recitative accompany'd", "Song", "Chorus" etc., English, probably 1770s, 2 pages , folio (c.31 x 20cms), with a C19 printed notice affixed to the margin "Words of Anthems for Christmas Day, and Good Friday, in the hand writing of his late Majesty King George the Third, and delivered by him to Dr. Boyce", watermark of crowned "GR", splitting at folds, slight loss, repaired with white tape

Catalogue Note

George III was passionate in his devotion to Handel's music which was frequently played at court. He preserved Handel's autographs in the King's Library and these are now in the British Library.
