Catalogue Note
Marie (1875-1938) was the eldest daughter of Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, and Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia. After an early marriage to Ferdinand of Romania and a series of extra-marital adventures, Marie became the self-styled "face of Romania" during the Great War and the subsequent successful diplomatic negotiations. She was also the author of such juvenilia as Peeping Pansy. The present work, splendidly bound and with numerous plates illustrating Romanian antiquities, begins with an Ode to Romania by the Queen.
