first issue, first edition of Pascal's greatest work, on Christian apologetics. It comprises various jottings and thoughts that came to Pascal at different times, intended to be carefully edited by Pascal for publication, but after his death in 1662 it began to circulate in manuscript and in 1667 Pascal's nephew applied for a privilege for the printing of it.
