Catalogue Note
One of Masriadi's wittiest, funniest and most charming works, Masriadi Fans Club was completed in the spirit of self-deprecation. As if bursting out of the entire canvas is a gorgeous femme fatale. Her long wispy hair is blowing in the wind. Big blue eyes, with their beautiful long lashes, sparkle, while her red lips part sensually, revealing a row of perfect white teeth. Her perfectly-shaped, amply-proportioned bosoms command attention as they bounce within a tight, white tank top emblazoned with the words "Masriadi Fans Club," which reveals a tiny waist and a flat stomach. However, the most interesting focal point in the composition is the girl's star pendant necklace, which is suspended in the air. Its shadow is visible on her chest, drawing a line directly towards her cleavage. It is a simple, but clever device that Masriadi utilised to indicate dynamic movement.
Masriadi rarely depicts the female figure as beautiful and as alluring as the one in the present painting. They are usually angular, with a touch of masculinity in their features, a far cry from the fresh embodiment of femininity in this picture. Her skin is depicted a bright shade of turquoise green - an apt choice when one considers the envy she would elicit in others, not only in women but also in men who would wish to have her as a member of their fan club. Mischievous and engaging, fun and flirty, Masriadi Fans Club represents the artist's less seen, but equally brilliant, playful side.
