Catalogue Note
Although the image does not correspond exactly with the text, it is possible that this drawing illustrates the episode from Virgil's Aeneid (IV, 160-172) when Aeneas and Dido flee from a storm.
The facial types are not unlike those seen in certain drawings by the Münster-born Rubens pupil, Jan Boeckhorst, but the medium and other aspects of the technique are not found in other drawings by the artist, and the possibility should also be considered that the drawing is actually by a more purely German artist who had not come into contact with Rubens.
